Olivia Wilde Portrait Painting

Olivia Wilde Portrait Painting

Hello and welcome back,

I recently finished a new painting test of mine and wanted to post it and write a few infos about the process.

The challenge for me was first of all understanding blending colors more. I found a really nice YouTube channel by the artist Wei Ho.
He is creating his paintings with more of an air brush approach. Its amazing how nice and soft he blends the different shades and still gets amazing sharp and crisp details. In some of his paintings he is talking about how he works, definitely worth taking a look.
I tried his technique in the beginning and was pretty lost for a while. Everything felt super soft and it was hard to keep the proportions right. After a few hours it started to get somewhere and I kept adding more and more details.
At the end I started to blend colors again like I did before by selecting colors close to the blending area and mixed them with a low opacity brush together.

The next big challenge was the hair. So far I found a way around drawing hair. For my first try I chose a reference where the hair is not open and waving around in the wind. This will be another project. I downloaded a hair brush set but couldn’t figure out how to use it the right way. In the end I had a lot of layers of single drawn hairs. I used layer masks to change the opacity in some areas to create more depth to it.

I learned a lot during this test and I’m looking forward to my next challenge. I don’t know what it’s going to be yet but it wont be too long until I start it.
Next time I will try to save different stages of the process. If it turns out to be an interesting addition to the final painting I’ll post it too.

Alright, that’s it for now, I hope you like the painting.

Thanks for swinging by and take care,
